Hunger Strike at Menard Correctional Center, Illinois

January 15-27 , 2014: After the shutdown of Tamms, Illinois supermax facility, long term solitary confinement prisoners are transferred to Menard Correctional, one of the state’s oldest and least maintained facilities. About 15 of these prisoners launch a hunger strike to protest continued solitary isolation in even worse conditions. On January 27, supporters hold a solidarity noise demonstration outside the prison.

Hunger Strike at Westville Correctional Facility, Indiana

January 13-24, 2014: A group of prisoners launch a hunger strike in protest of nutritionally deficient cold sack lunches. The lunches are the result of cutbacks by Aramark. After ten days and a protest and media campaign by outside supproters, hot lunches resume. Prison staff then retaliate by turning off heat to the unit.

Free Alabama Movement Strike

January 1-8, 2014: The Free Alabama Movement goes public with a work-stoppage against unpaid labor, sanitation issues and overcrowding. The protest lasts several days. According to the Free Alabama Movement, all of the 2,400 prisoners at both Holman and St Clair facilities participate.
