Uprising at Vanderburgh County Jail, Indiana

July 26, 2016: Prisoners at the Vanderburgh County Jail refused to be handcuffed, flooded their cell, put soap on the floor to trip the guards when they entered and used bed bunks and mattresses as barricades and shields. Sheriff Dave Wedding stated: “They were yelling, screaming, and they start violently kicking on our doors and pounding on the windows and these were nine people in a housing unit of about 70 people or so. Sometimes that can incite other people to follow their lead so we could’ve had bigger problems.”

Hunger Strikes at Two Immigrant Detention Centers in Ontario

July 11-29, 2016: A group of immigrant detainees in two facilities in Ontario participate in a coordinated hunger strike in protest of their placement in maximum security prisons, indefinite detention of immigrants and a variety of other grievances. The outside group End Immigration Detention Network holds solidarity demonstrations and supports the strikes. Another hunger strike occurs only 3 months later at the same facility.

Uprising at Butler County Jail, Kansas

July 10, 2016: Prisoners take control of the dining hall and refuse to return to their cells. They tip over tables, destroy surveillance equipment and set off fire extinguishers in an uprising that sparked by low quality food.
