Protest at Eastern Correctional Institute, Maryland

June 21, 2018: Prisoners at the Eastern Correctional Institute in Maryland stage a protest in which, according to a former correctional officer who spoke on condition of anonymity to WBOC in Maryland, at least 600 disobey orders and refuse to go back to their cells in a protest against conditions at the prison. At the time of the incident, the prison is dramatically understaffed–120 officers and 15 supervisors short. Following the incident, the prison is placed on lockdown for three weeks.

Uprising at Baffin Correctional Centre, Nunavut, Canada

June 20, 2018: An uprising in the Charlie Unit that lasted five hours caused extensive damage to the facility with estimates of the damages well over $100,00. Prisoners took over the wing, causing guards to abandon their posts, and threw various items at the windows of the unit including “a jail cell door, six chairs, three TVs, a bathroom sink and an exit sign, among others.”

Juneteenth Work Stoppage at Martin Correctional Institution, Florida

June 19th, 2018: In response to a call from the prisoner group SPARC for “community organizing and direct action” on Juneteenth, at least 50 prisoners at Martin Correctional Institution in Florida refused to go to work or to the dining hall and instead held prayer groups, according to the group Fight Toxic Prisons (FTP). FTP also commented that administrators at Martin confirmed that they placed the prison on lockdown for several days surrounding Juneteenth.
