Uprising at Santa Cruz County Jail, California

January 16, 2018: Prisoners tie trip lines from ripped jail-cell sheets, cover their arms with socks, hide their faces with makeshift masks and arm themselves with soap, a radio, mop, books and bottles of liquid. The 26 men housed in the west-wing L Unit complained it was too cold in their cells and drove an offensive against Santa Cruz County Jail officers entering the two-story, booby-trapped cell block. The men covered the unit floor with soap and water and blocked stairwells and walkways with mattresses as they tried to pelt the guards with books and soap.

Operation Push: Florida Work Stoppage

January 15, 2018: Prisoners across the Florida prison system organized a work stoppage beginning on Martin Luther King Jr. day. The strikers issued demands and engaged in boycotts of commissary.

Uprising at Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center, Ohio

January 8, 2018: At least 12 juvenile detainees between the ages of 14 and 16 took control of a pod and held it for more than three hours, destroying infrastructure, threatening guards and pouring soap on the floor. Initial estimates put the damage at $200,000 or more. Damages included damaged cell doors, clogged plumbing, broken ceiling tiles, light fixtures, windows, sprinklers, showers, toilets, and a broken television.

Hunger Strike at Edmonton Remand Centre, Alberta, Canada

January 6-10, 2018: At least 55 prisoners at the Edmonton Remand Centre in Alberta, Canada launch a hunger strike to protest an increase in violent attacks on prisoners by corrections officers. The jail responds by placing all striking prisoners in isolation and taking away their personal property. The hunger strike resolves 3 days later, according to the jail administration.
