Uprising at Kern Valley State Prison, California

February 7, 2017: A small fight leads to a riot involving approximately 125 prisoners. The incident spreads to a second cell block where 6 prisoners are attacked by guards using pepper spray and “less than lethal” direct impact rounds. Five prisoners are transported to a local hospital for injuries.

Fires Set at New Hampshire State Prison for Men

February 2, 2017: Protests spread to a second facility in New Hampshire as fires are set in protest of restrictive visitation policies in all three New Hampshire prisons. The new policy includes no kissing, no hugs lasting more than 3 seconds, no vending machines or board games, and physical separation for the duration of the visit.

Hunger Strike at Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility

February 2, 2017: Approximately 200 prisoners launch a two-day hunger strike in response to new visitation policies that include no kissing, no hugs lasting more than 3 seconds, no vending machines or board games, and physical separation for the duration of the visit.

Uprising at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, Delaware

February 1, 2017: Prisoners mask up and rush two officers following recreation time. They take a cell block for 18 hours, holding staff hostage, issuing demands to the media and explaining their actions as a response to conditions, the failure of non-violent protest, and the election of President Donald Trump. One hostage guard is killed during the uprising, and sixteen prisoners are charged with murder. They and two others are also charged with kidnapping, conspiracy and rioting.
