Uprising at Otero County Detention Center, New Mexico

April 30, 2017: During a routine lockdown, at least nine prisoners at Otero County Jail refused to comply with orders. When guards came into their pod to subdue them they wrapped their fists with towels, got into “fighting stances”, and attempted to attack the guards.

Inmates Set Fire to Uniforms at Cook County Jail, Chicago

April 15, 2017: On April 15th, inmates in the super-max wing of Cook County Jail light a wick using a microwave and set fire to a pile of uniforms meant to designate them as inmates who engage in sexual misconduct. Smoke from the fire causes the unit to be evacuated and four guards are taken to the hospital  for injuries related to the incident. Eight inmates are later charged with arson in connection with the event and one is charged with assaulting an officer.

Hunger Strike at Robert Presley Detention Center, California

April 13-May 1, 2017: Approximately 21 prisoners launched a hunger strike and released a list of demands including ending long-term solitary confinement, increased movement and access to phones and educational programming, and various other changes to “frivolous and irrelevant policies.”

Hunger Strike at Immigrant Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington

April 10, 2017: As many as 750 detainees at the Northwest Detention Center launch their first in a series of hunger strikes in protest of their conditions of confinement. The outside group NWDC Resistance does solidarity work for the strikers.

Hunger Strike at South Mississippi Correctional Institution

March/April, 2017 (Exact Dates Uncertain): Between 11 and 23 prisoners launched a hunger strike in protest of conditions at the prison, including extended lockdowns leading to lack of access to visitation and adequate recreation time.
