Disturbance at Alder Conservation Camp, California

June 3, 2019: Three prisoners and one staff member were injured after what the California Department of Corrections called a “riot” at Alder Conservation Camp. While details remain unclear, about 40 prisoners reportedly participated in the disturbance at the camp that houses about 100 minimum security prisoners.

Uprising at DeKalb County Jail, Georgia

May 15, 2019: During a protest in front of the jail, inmates inside smashed out windows in all three buildings of the facility. Many of the inmates then attempted to communicate through the smashed windows with protesters outside, shouting “help us” and “there is mold.”

Uprising at Spring Creek Correctional Center, Alaska

May 7, 2019: Approximately 62 prisoners barricaded themselves inside of their housing unit, Hotel Mod, and destroyed prison infrastructure. The Alaska Department of Corrections estimated that the riot caused $100,000 in damage to computer lines, cameras, interior glass, fire suppression systems and plumbing.

Uprising at Bell County Detention Center, Kentucky

May 1, 2019: At least five inmates flooded cells by clogging toilets and shower drains, set off fire alarms, and ripped a TV off the wall. The inmates then allegedly used pieces of the broken television as weapons to threaten officers that came into the cell.

Disturbance at Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center, Colorado

May 1, 2019: At least 8 detainees in the Cedar Lodge housing unit of the state-run treatment facility for juvenile offenders fought guards during a disturbance. The causes and details of the disturbance remain unclear, but 4 juveniles and 10 staff members were injured with 4 staff members being transported to the hospital for treatment.

Disturbance at Covington County Jail, Alabama

March 15, 2019: During a transfer of three prisoners, a group of “unruly” prisoners engaged in what the sheriff’s department called a “riot”—although they did not specify what that entailed. According to the sheriff’s department, the prisoners were upset because they believed that one of the prisoners being transferred had been pushed to the floor, although the sheriff claims the prisoner actually jumped.

Uprising at Maui Community Correctional Center, Hawaii

March 11, 2019: At least 42 prisoners refused to return to their cells at the end of recreation time and instead caused “significant damage” to prison infrastructure. The uprising occurred in two pods of the housing unit. Prisoners broke sprinklers, leading to flooding in the pod. The prisoners also started a fire which caused smoke damage in a neighboring pod.

Uprising at Crawford County Detention Center, Arkansas

March 8, 2019: When a sergeant and a deputy attempted to remove a prisoner from a pod containing 40 prisoners, the other 39 prisoners interfered. When the prisoner was removed, the rest of the prisoners attacked prison infrastructure, destroying televisions, lights, ceiling tiles, phones and the sprinkler system, which caused significant flooding.

Uprising at The Hills Youth and Family Services, Minnesota

March 4, 2019: A disturbance began when a detainee at the privately-owned and operated residential youth treatment center hit a staff member in the face. The event escalated until a large group of detainees had barricaded themselves in a room while other small groups were roaming the building.

Uprising at Lee County Juvenile Detention Center, Iowa

January 20, 2019: Four juvenile detainees participated in an uprising in the day room of the juvenile detention center. The juveniles destroyed property and sprayed fire extinguishers, setting off alarms. All four were charged with 2nd-Degree Criminal Mischief and Participating in a Riot.
