Documents Reveal a Series of Protests and Uprisings at Cook County Jail, Chicago

April 29, 2020: Documents recently released by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office reveal numerous incidents of prisoner-led protest and rebellion against guards and staff in the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak at the facility. As of May 6, more than 500 detainees at the Cook County Jail have tested positive for Covid-19 and 7 have died, according to statistics gathered by Injustice Watch and documents filed in court.

Inmates Set Fire to Uniforms at Cook County Jail, Chicago

April 15, 2017: On April 15th, inmates in the super-max wing of Cook County Jail light a wick using a microwave and set fire to a pile of uniforms meant to designate them as inmates who engage in sexual misconduct. Smoke from the fire causes the unit to be evacuated and four guards are taken to the hospital  for injuries related to the incident. Eight inmates are later charged with arson in connection with the event and one is charged with assaulting an officer.

Disturbance at Illinois Youth Center at Kewanee

March 24, 2015: According to the correctional officers union, seventeen inmates at the juvenile detention center smashed out windows at the facility and threatened one correctional officer with shards of glass.

Hunger Strike at Menard Correctional Center, Illinois

January 15-27 , 2014: After the shutdown of Tamms, Illinois supermax facility, long term solitary confinement prisoners are transferred to Menard Correctional, one of the state’s oldest and least maintained facilities. About 15 of these prisoners launch a hunger strike to protest continued solitary isolation in even worse conditions. On January 27, supporters hold a solidarity noise demonstration outside the prison.
