Iredell County Detention Center, Statesville, North Carolina
December 4, 2018
Fights broke out at about 7:45pm between four detainees and guards as the detainees were being led back from visitation. As the fight escalated, a group of about 25 detainees started “becoming loud, hitting the glass in the door, and causing disturbances,” according to the press release.
Following the disturbance, Shyheim Millsaps received medical attention for pepper-spray exposure and was charged with felony assault on a detention employee, felony inciting to riot, failure to disperse on command and disorderly conduct.
Martevis Simpson was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and Rick Chambers was charged with two counts of felony assault on a detention employee, felony inciting to riot, failure to disperse on command and disorderly conduct.
The disturbance occurred just one month after a similar fight between guards and detainees broke out the month before at the same facility.
