December 11, 2018: A group of about 10 prisoners barricaded themselves into the cafeteria unit of the jail at 11:30 am and used mattresses to defend themselves against guards. In the video, guards are seen spraying pepper spray on the prisoners and violently tackling them.

December 6, 2018: Three juvenile detainees participated in an uprising in the day room of the detention center. Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber spoke with The Hawk Eye, saying, “I’ve never seen it to this extent,” Weber said, describing the state of the day room where what he referred to as a “melee” occurred. One officer was treated for minor injuries.

December 4, 2018: Fights broke out at about 7:45pm between four detainees and guards as the detainees were being led back from visitation. As the fight escalated, a group of about 25 detainees started “becoming loud, hitting the glass in the door, and causing disturbances,” according to the press release.

November 30, 2018: 115 prisoners who work at the prison’s anagram balloon factory went on strike in response to delays in delivery of canteen items and abuse by guards. Prisoners state that the administration recently changed the amount of time it takes for canteen items to be delivered from one week to two weeks.

November 11, 2018: A fight broke out between two prison guards and four detainees during Sunday breakfast. After the altercation began between one detainee and a guard, other detainees joined in. Following the fight, charges were brought against all four prisoners.

November 6, 2018: A series of fights led to a riot in all five units of the Central Facility, leading to “extensive damage” to all of them. Kansas Department of Correction spokesman Samir Arif stated that “the fights were contained to the living unit pods. Some inmates were not responsive to officer orders and began trying to break windows and furniture within the living unit.”

October 2, 2018: Prisoners led a brief uprising in protest of a new policy that integrated yard time for prisoners in segregation and those in general population. Prisoners set fire to a mattress and started another fire in a bathroom. The uprising was quickly subdued by prison staff.
