Youth Correctional Center, Mandan, North Dakota

Four teenage detainees attacked guards and destroyed property in an alleged attempt to escape the facility. The detainees were housed in Pine Cottage, one of the housing units of the facility. State troopers responding to the incident shot the teens with bean bag rounds.
In the aftermath of the event, four teens were charged, some with felonies. The charges included assault, escape, and “terrorizing.” In August, 2019, the first defendant was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for assault on a correctional officer, terrorizing and interfering with an emergency call, and two misdemeanors. The other three defendants received sentences between 3 and 5 years.
