2016 National Prison Strike: Florida

2016 National Prison Strike: Florida
Florida September 7-12, 2016 Kicking the September 9 strike off early, 400 prisoners at Holmes Correctional rebel, damaging nearly every dorm in the facility. Several hundred more prisoners participate in disruptions and work stoppages in other facilities across northern Florida. Multiple prisoners are transferred to segregation, but continue to organize, leading to the Operation PUSH strike in January 2018. At Holmes Correctional, rebels threw blankets and sheets over the guard station’s windows, smashed security cameras and property. Officers from 5 other prisoners were needed to quell the rebellion, which spread from one dorm to another over the course of the night. The Campaign to Fight Toxic Prisons, Gainesville IWW, and other groups hold solidarity actions and collect reports from prisoners involved. They stage demonstrations and call for release of rebels from solitary confinement.
