December 27-28, 2016: About 80 prisoners at Baraga Correctional Facility in Michigan refused to go to the chow hall during meal time for at least two days in order to protest the quality and the quantity of food served to them by private contractor Trinity Services Group.

December 20-21, 2016: A riot involving at least a hundred prisoners breaks out in the medium security unit. Guards fire live ammunition at prisoners and one prisoner is shot.

Uprising at Saskatchewan Penitentiary, Canada

December 14, 2016: At least 185 prisoners refuse to attend their normally-scheduled activities and instead mask up, destroy surveillance cameras, erect barricades, set fires, destroy significant portions of the prison and smash a hole in the floor so they can move to different units.

Hunger Strike at Central East Correctional Centre, Ontario

October 16-29, 2016: Immigrant detainees re-launch their hunger strike (which had ended in July) in protest of their placement in maximum security prisons, indefinite detention of immigrants and a variety of other grievances. The outside group End Immigration Detention Network holds solidarity demonstrations and supports the strikes, which last over two weeks.

Two-Week Hunger Strike at Santa Clara County Jail, California

October 17-30, 2016: More than a hundred prisoners stage a two week hunger strike in protest of prison conditions. “Prisoners United of Silicon Valley” a group well-connected with local civil rights organizers leads the strike, coordinating with other California prisons and jails.

Prison Guards Quit En Masse at Holman Correctional Facility, Alabama

October 1, 2016: According to the Free Alabama Movement, Holman guards quit en masse. One guard is quoted as saying, “We’re tired of them playing games with y’all and our lives. It doesn’t make any sense. You be safe Lil Brother.”

Attack on Guards at Lanesboro Correctional Institution, North Carolina

September 29, 2016: Four guards are stabbed by prisoners, including a lieutenant and sergeant. Two are flown to hospital in critical condition.

South Carolina Rebellion

September 26-30, 2016: Amid frequent shakedowns, transfers and other retaliation for participating in the nation-wide strike, a prisoner named Michael Lorenzo Jones is killed in a fight between prisoners at McCormick CI. The Department of Corrections responds with a statewide lockdown and media blackout. The next day, and three hours away, prisoners refuse orders, jump on a guard and chase staff out of the unit. They maintain control of the unit for less than 12 hours. Over the next four days prisoners on Twitter (@prisonslavery1) report at least 5 more guards in different facilities being attacked and often hospitalized, including 4 stabbed at Lanesboro on the 30th.

Guards Skip Work at Holman Correctional Facility, Alabama

September 26, 2016: Amidst consistent organized and spontaneous rebellion by prisoners, an entire shift of correctional officers skip work, forcing the warden and director of prisons to hand out trays and otherwise run the facility. According to the Free Alabama Movement, at least some of the guards participate in solidarity with the prisoner’s protests.
