At least 8 detainees in the Cedar Lodge housing unit of the state-run treatment facility for juvenile offenders fought guards during a disturbance. The causes and details of the incident remain unclear, but 4 juveniles and 10 staff members were injured with 4 staff members being transported to the hospital for treatment.

Golden City Police were dispatched to respond to the incident shortly before 6 p.m. Officials say that two juveniles who they claim instigated the disturbance have been separated from the general population and will likely face charges.

A 2010 Department of Justice report found that 12% of the juveniles at the facility experienced sexual assault there, 80% of which was committed by a staff member. Those numbers were higher than the national average.
