Protest and Uprising at Florence Correctional Center, Arizona

Florence Correctional Center, Florence, Arizona
August 22, 2014

A group of prisoners from Vermont housed at the private, CCA-run (Corrections Corporation of America, now CoreCivic) facility, staged a coordinated protest, refusing to return to their cells. Prison guards responded to the protest by deploying a “chemical agent.” The prisoners then returned to their unit and began destroying prison infrastructure including microwaves, televisions and other equipment.

The prisoners were protesting their transfer to a prison thousands of miles away from friends and family as well as various limitations on their movement within the prison.
