Uprising at Walnut Grove Correctional Facility, Mississippi

Walnut Grove Correctional Facility,
July 10, 2014

Following the seizure of a large amount of contraband by guards, dozens of prisoners chased guards out and took control of multiple housing units of the facility. During the ensuing chaos, prisoners targeted and brutally beat other prisoners, requiring at least nine to require off-site medical attention.

Walnut Grove Correctional Facility, formerly the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility, was a privately-operated prison owned by the State of Mississippi that housed both youth and adult prisoners. The facility was operated by the Management and Training Corporation at the time of its closure in 2016 as a result of budget cuts.
