March 4, 2019: A disturbance began when a detainee at the privately-owned and operated residential youth treatment center hit a staff member in the face. The event escalated until a large group of detainees had barricaded themselves in a room while other small groups were roaming the building.

Uprising at Larned Correctional, Kansas

November 6, 2018: A series of fights led to a riot in all five units of the Central Facility, leading to “extensive damage” to all of them. Kansas Department of Correction spokesman Samir Arif stated that “the fights were contained to the living unit pods. Some inmates were not responsive to officer orders and began trying to break windows and furniture within the living unit.”

Attack on Staff at Central New York Psychiatric Center

September 3, 2014: Approximately a dozen prisoners swarmed staff in the kitchen area and began assaulting them at about 11:45 a.m. Some prisoners used kitchen implements as weapons. A similar incident occurred simultaneously on the floor above the first attack. It appeared the group attacks had been planned in advance, said an official with the state Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.

Disturbance at The Meadows Behavioral Health Treatment Facility, Pennsylvania

February 26, 2011 (exact date unknown): An unknown number of juveniles participated in a disturbance that injured several employees and a state trooper. Five juveniles between the ages of 13 and 17 were arrested following the incident and charged with aggravated assault, criminal mischief and sparking a riot.

Georgia 2010 Work Stoppages

December 9 -15, 2010: A multiracial group of prisoners participate in a coordinated work stoppage in at least six facilities and demand decent wages, better social services and respect for their civil liberties. After six days and brutal reprisals, including two prisoners Kelvin Stevenson and Miguel Jackson being beaten with hammers, the strike ends. It takes days for family members to learn if the prisoners survived the beating and months and a lawsuit for video and pictures of the incident to be released.
