Hunger Strike at Suffolk County House of Corrections, Massachusetts

February 15-20, 2019: Seventy-two ICE detainees in the 8-2 unit of the Suffolk County House of Corrections launched a hunger strike in response to a number of grievances related to jail conditions. The hunger strikers presented a list of demands to prison staff on February 10 which include problems with specific staff members as well as a number of grievances related to conditions at the jail.

August 20, 2018: At least 6 prisoners participated in an attack on prison guards. The attack began between one prisoner and two guards and other prisoners and guards joined the fight as it progressed.

Hunger Strike at Bristol County House of Corrections, Massachusetts

July 17-26, 2018: Approximately 60 immigrant detainees went on hunger strike on July 17 in protest of conditions in the part of the jail operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). When prisoners in the general population unit of the same jail heard of the hunger strike on the news, 250 joined the protest in solidarity. Reports of exact dates and numbers of strikers vary between sources.

Uprising at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, Massachusetts

January 10, 2017: After a fight broke out during recreation, officers ordered prisoners to return to their cells without showers. This caused a standoff–prisoners refused to return into their cells and forced guards out of the unit. Prisoners took control of a cellblock and destroyed the unit, using fire extinguishers to destroy computers and surveillance cameras and smashing windows, ceiling tiles and sprinkler systems. The unit was a total loss, according to authorities. There were no reported injuries.

Attack on Guards at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, Massachusetts

June 25, 2018: A prisoner stabbed a prison guard, allegedly in retaliation for the guard confiscating his property the previous day. When other guards came to the aid of the stabbed guard, two other prisoners joined the fight.

Uprising by Vermont Prisoners at Franklin County Jail, Massachusetts

July 7, 2011: At least 15 Vermont prisoners housed in the Massachusetts jail refuse to lock down in their cells and destroy prison infrastructure and throw furniture, blankets and other debris “over the railing” on to the tier below. The riot lasts approximately 3 hours before it is subdued by prison guards.
