Disturbance at Ridgeland Correctional Institution, South Carolina

Ridgeland Correctional Institution, Jasper County, South Carolina
June 3, 2013

After a prisoner was caught allegedly trying to retrieve a package of contraband that had been thrown over the fence, other prisoners in his dorm fought and protested, refusing to return to their cells. Guards deployed tear gas to regain control. One guard and one prisoner reported injuries. Details of the event remain unclear.

The prisoner attempting to retrieve the contraband may have climbed out through the ceiling in order to gain access to the yard where the package was. The package thrown over the outer fence contained tobacco and a cell phone. Police blocked off all the roads near the prison through the night. By 3:46am everyone had returned to their cells, and the facility remained on lockdown until June 5.
