Hunger Strike at Robert Presley Detention Center, California

June 30-July 15, 2019: Four female prisoners housed at the Robert Presley Detention Center engaged in a 16-day hunger strike in protest of various conditions at the facility, including sexual harassment by guards, lack of mental health treatment and lack of adequate time out of their cells, according to The Press-Enterprise of Southern California.

Refused meals at Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, Colorado

August 19, 2017: Nearly 100 prisoners at a women’s facility refuse meals for one day in solidarity with Millions for Prisoners and those experiencing repression following the national prison strike of September, 2016. Prisoners share commissary food items and make sure each other’s needs are met as they refuse to go to the chow hall. Outside demonstrators rally outside the prison gates, releasing balloons and demonstrating solidarity.

Hunger Strike at Alfred D. Hughes Unit, Texas

September 22 – October 1, 2016: One trans woman endures a hunger strike for more than a week to demand precedent-setting access to bras for protection, modesty during strip searches, and support during hormone therapy. Guards make threats and one guard suggests that the trans prisoner castrate herself. The prisoner, Vanessa Gibson, wins access to bras and is currently suing TDOC.

2016 National Prison Strike: Texas

September 9, 2016: Prisoners across seven facilities in Texas go on strike to protest their conditions of confinement, including unpaid prison labor, toxic water, mold, and excessive heat. With multiple prisons on lockdown and restrictions on both incoming and outgoing prisoner mail, guards deny that prisoners are participating in the strike. Prisoners eventually confirm participation at seven prisons. Austin ABC helps amplify the struggle of a trans woman who went on hunger strike and won gender affirming clothing.

Uprising at Henry County Jail, Indiana

August 3-4, 2016: Prisoners set fire to mattresses and jail uniforms on two subsequent nights. The first fire is set in the male assigned part of the jail. The next night prisoners in the women’s side light another fire. Prisoners also attempt to deactivate the locks on their jail cells.
