2018 National Prison Strike: Georgia

August, 2018 (exact dates uncertain): Jailhouse Lawyers Speak declare active boycotts and work stoppages at multiple facilities in Georgia, but state that “strike numbers are not yet strong enough to shut down a prison”. A spokesperson for JLS reminds reporters of the brutal retaliation during Georgia’s 2010 work stoppage. Staff at facilities deny that any prisoners are demonstrating.

Hunger Strike at Georgia State Prison

February 26, 2015: At least four prisoners went on hunger strike to protest various conditions, including beatings and lack of access to sufficient food, sanitation, exercise, and an effective grievance process. They also demanded an end to the state’s Tier Program, a 2013 initiative that created three increasingly restrictive levels of “Administrative Segregation” to deal with prisoners who were deemed a significant threat to security by administrators.
