Food Strike at California State Prison, Corcoran

June 27, 2019-ongoing: At least half of the prisoners in the 3C unit of the California State Prison, Corcoran began a food strike on June 27 in protest of a change in prison policy that would take kitchen jobs away from general population and give them to prisoners in protective custody, according to multiple sources. Prisoners are refusing state-issued “trays” but are instead eating bag lunches provided by the prison.

Hunger Strike at California State Prison, Corcoran

January 9 – 28, 2019: According to the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (IWOC), at least 250 prisoners went on hunger strike at the facility’s 3C Unit, although the strike may extend to other units as well.

California Prison Hunger Strike

July 8 – September 5, 2013: Following more delays and slow response to 2011 hunger strikes, Pelican Bay prisoners start another hunger strike in California. Over 30,000 prisoners join in, including hundreds throughout the United States. This is the largest hunger strike in history, bringing the issue of solitary confinement to the attention of the media, legislators, the United Nations, and the public in general.

California Hunger Strike Resumes

September 26-October 15, 2011: After months of meetings and frustration with California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) delays, prisoners at Pelican Bay State Prison (PBSP) resume the hunger strike they’d suspended on July 20th. The call to action spreads across the California system, with participation from thousands of prisoners. On October 14th, the PBSP prisoners agree to again suspend the strike pending cooperation from California officials. In the summer of 2013, they will resume the strike again, with over 30,000 prisoners participating.
