August 27, 2018: According to the group IDOC Watch, “Several inmates in the Secure Housing Unit (SHU) at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility are initiating a hunger strike in protest of their already starvation-level meal portions, their lack of access to basic necessities like adequate clothing, and access to commissary items.”

2018 National Prison Strike: North Carolina

August, 2018 (exact dates uncertain): North Carolina prisoners issued a set of 8 additional demands focusing on mental health treatment and solitary confinement as well as a call for truce between various groups of prisoners. On August 20, supporters gathered for a noise demo outside Hyde Correctional Institution during the prisoners’ yard time. Prisoners responded to the demo by holding up their own banners saying “parole” “better food” and “solidarity”. Unconfirmed strike activity was reported at 11 prisons in the state.

2018 National Prison Strike: Georgia

August, 2018 (exact dates uncertain): Jailhouse Lawyers Speak declare active boycotts and work stoppages at multiple facilities in Georgia, but state that “strike numbers are not yet strong enough to shut down a prison”. A spokesperson for JLS reminds reporters of the brutal retaliation during Georgia’s 2010 work stoppage. Staff at facilities deny that any prisoners are demonstrating.

August, 2018 (exact dates uncertain): According to IWOC Gainesville, prisoners at five facilities in Florida engage in work strikes and commissary boycotts: Charlotte Correctional Institution, Dade Correctional Institution, Holmes Correctional Institution, Appalachee Correctional Institution, Franklin Correctional Institution. Outside supporters with Gainesville IWOC and other groups stage a series of solidarity actions, including an occupation outside the work release camp near Gainesville.

2018 National Prison Strike: Ohio

August 21-September 17, 2018 (exact end date uncertain): According to Central Ohio IWOC, at least two prisoners, David Easley and James Ward, go on hunger strike on August 21 in response to a call for a national prison strike and in protest of violence by correctional officers at their institution and lack of healthcare for prisoners. According to IWOC, Toledo Correctional confirms that some prisoners are refusing meals but does not confirm how many. Although it is uncertain how long the initial hunger strike lasts, IWOC announces that the strike begins again on September 14, this time joined by a third prisoner, Matt Hinkston.

2018 National Prison Strike: Burnside Jail, Nova Scotia

August 21 – September 9, 2018: On August 19 prisoners at Central Nova Correctional Facility in Burnside, Nova Scotia issue a statement in solidarity with the nationwide prisoner strike in the US. Their statement contained a committment to striking and a list of demands. They refused work and faced severe retaliation, including humaliating body scans and being locked in dry cells (no water or working toilets) for three days.

August 21 – September 9, 2018 (exact dates vary based on location): Prisoners with Jailhouse Lawyers Speak and other organizations issued 10 national demands with a call to action for work stoppages, sit-down strikes, hunger strikes and boycotts of the commissary. Organizers stated that the strike was organized in response to the riot at Lee Correctional Institution in South Carolina that resulted in the violent deaths of seven prisoners.
