On Sunday, April 19, 2020, multiple prisoners confined at Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell, Florida, attacked a guard. On the day of the attack, the cases of COVID-19 at Sumter Correctional had risen from seven to 24.

The Florida Department of Corrections’ press release on the attack stated that the guard was in stable condition at a local hospital. The dorm involved in the attack was not under medical isolation or quarantine. The facility was on restricted movement.

Miami Herald reported a quote from a prisoner’s email regarding COVID-19 at Sumter Correctional Institution, stating that “the inmates are getting tired of it…we don’t know exact numbers or what’s the truth…All they are doing is lying to us.”
