Prisoners Start a Fire at Unnamed Texas Prison in Response to COVID-19

Unknown prison, Texas
March, 2020 (exact date unknown)

Prisoners at an unknown facility in Texas started a fire in their unit during the last week of March, 2020 to protest lack of access to electricity and showers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a video received by The Marshall Project, a prisoner explains, “It’s a nonviolent protest going on right now because the officers, in the middle of the coronavirus, have refused us electricity for several hours, no showers or anything.”

The Marshall Project did not release the video or the name of the facility to protect the prisoners involved. A prison spokesperson claimed to have no record of the incident.
