Rikers Island Otis Bantum Correction Center, New York, New York
November 23, 2017
Prisoners carry out a premeditated, retaliatory attack on a corrections captain following the captain’s alleged use of excessive force. Ninety minutes before the attack, prisoners were spotted on surveillance camera footage holding a meeting. Three prisoners attacked the captain while others stole pepper spray canisters from other guards and prevented them from intervening in the attack. No other corrections staff were harmed.
Two other jail captains were caught on surveillance camera footage running away from the altercation and were placed on disciplinary leave following the incident. Fifteen prisoners were later indicted for their involvement.
