Disturbance at Bernalillo Metropolitan Detention Center, New Mexico

Metropolitan Detention Center, Bernalillo County, New Mexico
March 2, 2015

Two prisoners caused a disturbance by damaging parts of their prison cells and trying to agitate other prisoners. One kicked and broke cell doors, while the other smashed a cell door window. The damage cost the prison over $1,000.

After causing damage to parts of their jail cells, both prisoners took steps to protect themselves from guards. One wrapped his face to protect himself from mace, while the other used his mattress to deflect bean bags that jail staff shot from a shotgun. The latter prisoner was found to have a piece of metal in his mouth that staff claimed could be used as a weapon.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, the two prisoners were upset because they were not able to get haircuts.

Both were charged with multiple counts of conspiracy and unlawful assault in jail. One was charged with possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, and assault with intent to commit a violent felony on a police officer.
