Madera County Jail, Madera, California
September 19, 2014
Five prisoners escaped from the Madera County Jail after one prisoner tunneled out of his cell and into a common area, broke out a window and escaped. It is uncertain whether the other four prisoners coordinated the escape with the tunneling prisoner, or simply followed him out the window.
The escape attempt occurred on a Friday night. By the next evening, four of the escapees had been apprehended by the police and taken back into custody. The fifth escapee was caught on Sunday afternoon.
